We want your child to thrive in our school and as such we strive for a goal of 100% attendance for all
pupils to maximise their school experience. Through our relational approach we seek to build secure
relationships, foster strong engagement and a sense of belonging in our community so that all
children can succeed. With this in mind, it is essential that children are on time and attend school
every day unless the reason for absence is unavoidable. Our Absence Policy has been developed to
support us as a school community in managing absence effectively so that our pupils can maximise
their school experience.
Bovey Tracey Primary School aims to meet its obligations relating to school attendance by:
A whole calendar year has 365 days – a school year has only 190 days. This leaves 175 days to spend
on family time, visits, holidays and other appointments. We encourage all pupils to work towards
100% attendance and set a minimum attendance target of 97%. Bovey Tracey is committed to providing a full and efficient educational experience to all pupils. Children attending every day, and on time is key to steady pupil progress and enjoyment of learning, and for this reason the school is dedicated to ensuring maximum attendance for all pupils.
Absence From School Due to Illness
Attendance is checked every day. Parents/Carers should notify the school of the reason for an
absence before 9am on each day of absence providing a reason for absence and when their child will
be returning to school. This can be done by phoning 01626 833257 or emailing the office at
boveytracey@lapsw.org . We will contact parents and/or other listed emergency
contacts where no contact has been made. Safeguarding is our absolute priority. Therefore, as
outlined in our policy, where required we will make reasonable enquiries if no contact has been
made. Please also telephone or email us for each subsequent day of illness.

Absence From School due to exceptional circumstances
As far as possible, medical and dental appointments should be made outside of the school day.
Where this is not possible, an appointment card/confirmation email should be sent to us prior to the
appointment so that we can record this on our attendance system. Pupils need to attend school
before and after the appointment wherever possible.
If your child will be absent from school due to exceptional circumstances, please complete an absence request from in advance.

As a school, we remain committed to supporting every child to be engaged with our school
environment and curriculum. We aspire to be a supportive and inclusive environment and will
always seek to respond to need where pupils require additional support. Regular attendance helps
children to make good progress, enjoy learning and to develop peer friendships. We are dedicated to
making this a success and appreciate your support as parents in making sure your child maintains the
highest possible level of attendance.
